GMV Max is TikTok's automated ad campaign for TikTok Shop. You choose the products, an ROI target and a daily budget, and TikTok's system decides which videos to run, who sees them and where. Since July 2025, it's the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads, so every brand advertising its TikTok Shop is now running GMV Max.
The setup takes minutes. Making it profitable takes more thought. This guide covers how GMV Max works, the difference between Product and LIVE GMV Max, how to set up a campaign, how to choose an ROI target, how ROI protection works and how to read your results.
TikTok describes Product GMV Max as "an automation solution for TikTok Shop Ads that optimizes for your TikTok Shop's total channel ROI." In practice, it "chooses the products, creative assets and placement options that are most likely to encourage people to buy your products."
GMV stands for gross merchandise value: the total value of products sold. On TikTok Shop it's the headline sales number in your dashboard. GMV Max is named for it because the campaign's job is to grow those sales while holding the return you've asked for.
GMV Max is TikTok's product. Shopee runs a campaign type with the same name, and it's a separate tool. Everything here is about TikTok Shop in the US.
TikTok's help center is direct about the change: "Starting July 2025, GMV Max will be the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads."
If you create ads with the Sales objective and your TikTok Shop as the destination, "you will no longer be able to create, edit or duplicate LIVE Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads or Video Shopping Ads." Campaigns you already had in those formats keep running. You can move them across with the Upgrade now prompts in TikTok Ads Manager, and TikTok says they "will transition using your historical ROI results as your target ROI."
Two older formats survive in narrow cases. LIVE Shopping Ads can still be created by selecting a TikTok identity, and Video Shopping Ads can still run with Showcase as the destination. For ads that sell from your TikTok Shop, GMV Max is the tool.
GMV Max comes in two types, and they're built for different jobs.
Product GMV Max promotes the products in your shop. Its goal, in TikTok's words, is to "optimize for overall product ROI while scaling your product's total non-live GMV." It can use every creative available for those products, including your own videos and authorized affiliate videos, and it runs across "the TikTok feed, search, the TikTok Shop Tab, and TikTok Ad Network," in both video and product card formats. You can build it in TikTok Ads Manager or Seller Center.
LIVE GMV Max promotes your livestreams. TikTok describes it as "an automated Shop Ads campaign that optimizes liveroom traffic to get the highest gross revenue for your LIVE event." You create it in Seller Center, and it uses two creative types the system allocates automatically:
TikTok suggests LIVE GMV Max if you're actively investing in livestreaming, want to grow livestream GMV or want to keep LIVE ROI strong. One rule to know: while a LIVE GMV Max campaign is active on your shop's primary ad account, existing LIVE Shopping Ads for your shop's official TikTok account are paused automatically, and they don't restart on their own when the campaign ends. Check LIVE GMV Max availability for your shop in Seller Center.
Most brands start with Product GMV Max. Add LIVE GMV Max when livestreaming is a regular part of how you sell.
GMV Max takes over most of the decisions advertisers used to make by hand. According to TikTok, it will:
You keep control of the inputs that matter most: which products go in, the ROI target, the daily budget, the start date and which creatives the system can draw on. That's where a brand's judgment shows up in the results.
TikTok also says GMV Max "is designed for all TikTok Shop advertisers. Every product can be promoted using GMV Max, regardless of its initial GMV scale or available creative volume." There's no minimum sales history or video count to get started.
If you're on the seller's team, TikTok lists four requirements:
If an agency runs GMV Max for you, it needs ad promotion access to your shop, GMV Max authorization on the advertiser account it uses, and operator or admin access to that account. Product GMV Max is available in the United States, along with Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.
When you publish, older ads for those products switch off. Promote all products and "all VSA and PSA ads will be automatically turned off across all ad accounts." Promote specific products and only their Video and Product Shopping Ads turn off.
If Create GMV Max ads is greyed out, check that you have operator or admin access to the advertiser account and that the account is authorized for GMV Max. If your shop doesn't appear, check its Business Center connection and your shop permission.
GMV Max has two optimization modes, and TikTok is clear about when to use each.
Target ROI is the default. You set the return you want and GMV Max spends toward it. TikTok says Target ROI "should remain the always-on strategy for sustained growth and efficiency if sellers require a stable or expected ROI result."
Max delivery is a mode you switch on for an existing campaign, for chosen products or livestreams, over a set period. It "aims to fully spend your budget to achieve the highest possible gross revenue or ad delivery," and TikTok warns it "may result in fluctuations in metrics related to ROI." TikTok suggests it for short, high-impact pushes: launching a new shop or product, a major sales period, or selling through a large amount of inventory fast. For new shops, TikTok recommends running it "for 5–7 days with a set daily budget," then switching to Target ROI if you want steadier returns.
One more difference matters: ROI protection covers Target ROI campaigns and doesn't cover Max delivery.
On TikTok, ROI is a revenue ratio. TikTok's LIVE GMV Max page defines it as "your total liveroom GMV divided by your total ad spend," and its Ads Manager reporting defines ROAS the same way: "The return (Gross Revenue) on ad spend (Cost) based on purchase event." An ROI of 5 means $5 in sales for every $1 of ads.
That ratio says nothing about profit. A campaign can hit its ROI target and still lose money, so work out your break-even ROI from your own margins before you pick a number.
Here's an illustrative example with made-up figures. Say that for every $100 of sales on a product:
That leaves $40 to spend on ads before you lose money. Break-even ROI is $100 divided by $40, or 2.5. Any ROI target below 2.5 loses money on every sale. A target of 4 means spending $25 on ads per $100 of sales, which leaves $15 of profit.
Two practical points. Set the target per product group, because margins differ across a catalog. And if your account has GMV Max Pro's affiliate cost optimization, check how it treats affiliate commission before you subtract it yourself.
ROI protection is TikTok's safety net for Target ROI campaigns. It "automatically issues ad credits when the return on investment (ROI) for your campaign falls below a certain threshold despite following GMV Max guidelines and best practices." It has applied since February 25, 2026.
A campaign can qualify on a given day when both of these are true:
When it qualifies, TikTok credits back the spend above what you'd have paid at 90% of your target. You can see which campaigns are covered in the ROI protection column of your campaign list, and View history shows the last 60 days.
How you manage a campaign decides whether you keep that cover. On Product GMV Max, protection doesn't apply on a day you manually raise the ROI target or lower it more than once. It also doesn't apply on days you pause or delete the campaign or edit its products, to Max delivery, or to boost budgets. TikTok notes that GMV Max "prioritizes ROI achievement on a daily basis, so you may experience fluctuations in ROI throughout the day," so judge results on full days.
The practical rule is simple. Set a target you can live with, avoid raising it, make changes at most once a day and leave products alone mid-campaign. Credits are subject to TikTok's Ad Credit Terms.
Read your GMV Max dashboard with one rule in mind. TikTok says "all orders resulting from products you advertise will be attributed to Product GMV Max, including those from organic content and affiliate orders." It calculates GMV "for same-day orders with a one-day attribution window."
That means your reported ROI counts every same-day sale of the promoted products, including sales from organic videos and affiliate posts. Some of those orders would have happened without ads. TikTok's aim is "incremental GMV," but the dashboard number blends paid and organic.
To judge what your ads are adding:
GMV Max is only as good as the videos it can choose from. It draws on your own posts and on creators who promote your products.
TikTok says "GMV Max automatically includes authorized affiliate videos that feature your selected products." To use them, set your video source to Affiliate post. If a video you want doesn't appear, you can ask the creator for authorization, or add it with its video code and select TikTok post as the source.
That makes your TikTok Shop affiliate program part of your ad strategy. More creators posting about your products gives GMV Max more creatives to test, and samples are one of the fastest ways to get creators posting.
A note on disclosure: affiliate videos for products in your campaign "will receive a commercial content label," and when you post organic content that promotes a product, TikTok says you "should apply a commercial content label by turning on the content disclosure setting."
TikTok describes Spark Ads as "a native ad format that allows you to leverage organic TikTok posts and their features in your advertising products in your TikTok Shop." They've long been a common way to put budget behind a creator video that was already selling.
For ads that sell from your shop, the route now runs through GMV Max. TikTok's Spark Ads help page says: "To create ads using the Sales objective and your TikTok Shop as the sales destination, you can create a GMV Max campaign." Inside that campaign, GMV Max draws on authorized organic posts, including creator videos, as its creatives. You still find and authorize the videos worth putting money behind. GMV Max decides how much each one gets.
GMV Max Pro is "a solution pack built on GMV Max" that brings other costs and incentives into the same view as your ads. TikTok lists three building blocks:
It's still rolling out, and TikTok says it's "currently available to some advertisers in supported markets and scenarios." Check your account to see which building blocks you can use.
Every product can go into GMV Max, so the choice is yours to make well. GMV Max buys traffic, and traffic is only one part of what makes a product sell. Pattern looks at ecommerce growth as an equation: revenue equals traffic times conversion times price times availability. GMV Max moves the first lever. The other three decide whether that traffic turns into profitable sales.
Strong candidates have:
The 20-order threshold for ROI protection points the same way. Products that already sell steadily get the most out of GMV Max. New launches are better suited to a short Max delivery push, then a move to Target ROI.
Judging success on GMV alone. Rising GMV can hide falling profit. Set targets from your margins and read ROI against break-even.
Promoting every product at once. "Promote all products" is quick, but it puts low-margin and slow-moving products under the same target as your best sellers.
Changing the ROI target too often. Raising it, or lowering it more than once in a day, removes that day's ROI protection.
Editing products mid-campaign. Days with product edits aren't covered by ROI protection either.
Running out of creatives. GMV Max can only choose from the videos it has. A thin library caps performance.
Leaving Max delivery on. It's built for short pushes. Left running, it spends the full budget with no ROI cover.
Treating TikTok Shop in isolation. TikTok shoppers also buy on Amazon, Walmart and your own site. Look at what GMV Max does to total sales.
GMV stands for gross merchandise value, the total value of products sold. GMV Max is TikTok's automated campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads, designed to grow those sales while holding your ROI target.
You choose products, an ROI target, a daily budget and a start date. GMV Max then creates and pauses ads, picks the best-performing creatives, sets audiences and places ads across the TikTok feed, search, the Shop Tab and TikTok Ad Network.
Since July 2025, GMV Max is the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads. Older Video, Product and LIVE Shopping Ads campaigns keep running, and you can upgrade them to GMV Max in Ads Manager.
Target ROI is the always-on mode that aims for a stable return and is covered by ROI protection. Max delivery spends your full budget to maximize revenue over a short period, lets ROI fluctuate and isn't covered by ROI protection.
It's how TikTok Shop ads run now, so the question is how to make it profitable. Set your ROI target from your margins, choose products that already convert and keep creators posting.
TikTok doesn't set a minimum and offers a recommended daily budget during setup. For new shops using Max delivery, TikTok suggests a set daily budget for 5–7 days.
GMV Max automates the ad decisions. The decisions around it still belong to you: which products go in, what return each can afford, how many creators are posting and whether the ads are adding sales or just counting them.
